The Importance of Hydration for Weight Loss

The Importance of Hydration for Weight Loss

Water plays an important role in not only your overall health, but in the weight-loss journey. Hydrating is especially important if you’ve had the Lap-Band® Surgery, as failing to stay hydrated after a bariatric procedure can lead to hospitalization due to dehydration. Water helps flush the system, aids in digestion, and reduces fluid retention, so you should prioritize drinking several glasses per day.

A Healthy Option

When you’re thirsty, do you grab for a glass of water or something sugary, like alcohol, soda, or juice? Drinking more water is linked to reduced kilojoule consumption. Drinking a glass of water instead of an alternative like juice or soda helps you lower your kilojoule and sugar consumption naturally because water is free of kilojoules and sugar. It’s easy to over-consume when drinking; you may not realize how many kilojoules you are consuming when you grab a glass of juice. Not to mention, the artificial sugars in juice and soda have been linked to feelings of hunger even when you may not be hungry.

Reduce Appetite

Sometimes you may feel hungry when you are actually just thirsty. Regularly drinking water, especially before meals, can have several benefits. Drinking a glass of water expands your stomach and sends the signal to your brain that you are full. So instead of reaching for a snack, you may want to instead drink a glass of water and wait a few minutes to see if you are truly hungry.

Burn Calories

Some studies show that staying hydrated can help you perform better during your exercise sessions, and it can even help you burn calories. This may be partially because your metabolism has to work harder to warm cold water and if you are dehydrated, your metabolism slows.

Daily Water Intake

How much water you should drink per day varies from person to person depending upon a variety of factors, including how much an individual sweats per day. Be sure you always carry a reusable water bottle with you so you can refill it throughout the day. A good rule of thumb is to drink water when you are thirsty and to sip on it throughout the day. This should equate to drinking about 1-2 litres of water per day.

It’s important to remember that drinking water is only one piece of the larger puzzle. You must still follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
